Why US 441 is a Must Drive
Smoky Mountain scenic drives are a big deal, and arguably none of them are more stunning than US 441! This road takes you on a journey through the heart of the Smokies, giving guests easy access to overlooks and mountain views. US 441 takes visitors to Newfound Gap, which is the lowest drivable pass in the national park. During fall, the scenery along this road is especially stunning as the reds, yellows, and oranges of autumn paint a picture that is perfect for snapping unforgettable photos.
US 441 closed August 1st, 2025 after a washout and landslide damaged 125 feet of the road. While the North Carolina side of the road quickly reopened just a couple days after the incident, the Tennessee portion of the road was closed for more extensive repairs at Sugarlands Visitor Center. Crews worked for nearly 24 hours a day to complete the restoration project.
